Bodegas Pinoso Cepa 50
CEPA 50, BODEGAS PINOSO
Bottle notes
Founding members set up Bodegas Pinoso as a co-operative in the province of Alicante in 1932 and throughout the years the numbers of wine producers who have joined the co-operative, has extended as such. Through continued investment in new technology and personnel, the winery now boasts 250 co-op members and 1200 hectares of vines, half of which are designated solely to ecological production. Being located so close to the Mediterranean Sea gives way to a continental climate and therefore little rainfall, plenty of sunlight and hours of sun; meaning their Monastrell led wines display intense characteristics – both in flavour and appearance.
This delicious red is made exclusively from Monastrell grapes grown on Bodegas Pinoso’s oldest vines, with an average age of around 50 years – hence its name. Despite the high temperatures and dry conditions, these vines are un-irrigated. Pinoso describe it as ‘a surprising wine, capable of evoking the most exquisite nuances from our land’. More prosaically, it’s a lovely ruby red colour with aromas of ripe plums and cherries, overlaid on a spicy vanilla-tinged background. Initially quite dry alongside ripe, dark fruits, with mocha characters.
This is a food friendly wine that’s best enjoyed when it’s been allowed to breathe and allow the rich fruit flavours to come through. Smoked pork, rich chorizo stew or paella will all be impressive when paired with this delicious wine. If there’s a surprise involved perhaps it’s the quality of the wine for this price!
