Breitenbach - Tokaji Furmint Lapis terrace Magnum
Bottle notes
100% organically farmed Furmint from the Lapis cru in Tokaj. Fermented spontaneously, aged for 5 months in old (10 yo) 500-liter oak casks. 10 g/l residual sugar.Pale whitish-green color. Somewhat restrained and a bit neutral nose with aromas of ripe citrus fruits, some youthful, candied nuances of gummi bear and a hint of white peach. The wine is ripe, firm and dry-ish to off-dry on the palate with a medium body and bright flavors of Golden Delicious apple, some creamy tones, a little bit of juicy white peach, light honeyed tones, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of apple jam. The overall feel is structured and focused, thanks to the high acidity, whereas the residual sugar mainly seems to lend a bit of oily richness to the texture and boost the otherwise a bit neutral fruit flavours, instead of bringing any noticeable sweetness to the taste. The finish is ripe, juicy and moderately long with off-dry flavours of ripe white peach, some fresh apple, light honeyed tones, a little bit of creamy oak and a hint of stony minerality. A sophisticated and harmonious Tokaji white that is a still rather youthful and a bit restrained in style.Although the wine has some residual sugar, it really didn't feel any sweeter than the dry wines tasted before or after - instead the RS seemed to give a bit of boost to the fruit, which might've been a bit austere had the wine been fermented to full dryness. All in all, this is a fine-tuned Furmint made in a low-key and somewhat lean style that might not show its best right now, but nevertheless shows good potential for future development. While enjoyable, I feel I didn't really get "inside" this wine fully yet, as it is so young now I really don't whether it is Arthur or Martha. I hope and believe that with some years of additional aging the direction into which this wine is going will become clearer for a magnum.
