Ecker Eckhof Roter-Veltliner
Not to be confused with Grüner-Veltliner, this variety offers a richer, more complex flavour married with a fresh and very zippy acidity. The Roter Veltliner is certainly one to be savoured as these grapes don’t flourish easily, and require a dedicated and patient winemaker who is prepared to wait for low-yielding, late maturing grapes. If aromatics and wine discoveries are your thing, make it worth Mr. Ecker’s while and take a punt on something slightly different here, you won’t be disappointed.
Ecker describes the flavour profile of the species Roter Veltliner in contrast to the Grüner Veltliner like this: "I think that the Roter Veltliner is more complex and in the extract richer than the Grüner Veltliner. Further I require harvesting the grapes always fully ripe. The higher acidity than those by Grüner Veltliner, I find personally very interesting, and besides you can store the wines of the Roter Veltliner really great. "
