Flint Vineyard Pinot Noir Precoce English Red Wine
This wine shows a wonderful complexity of fruit with sour cherry and cranberry shining through. The palate is soft yet structured, akin to a Beaujolais Cru from Fleurie. The grapes were partially fermented as whole bunch, partially crushed and destemmed. After fermentation the wine was transferred to oak barrel where it completed malolactic fermentation and matured for 6 months. Based in the sunny and sheltered Waveney Valley in South Norfolk, overlooking the villages of Earsham and Bungay, Flint Vineyard’s winemaker Ben Witchell crafts wines using a blend of innovation and a respect for tradition. The vineyard site was selected as one of the driest and sunniest regions in England and the south-east facing vines are planted on free-draining gravel and flint soil.
Tasting Notes
www.jancisrobinson.com review: Florist-shop greens and petals with an undertow of ripe redcurrants. Super-fresh, energetic. Slim as a whippet but not skinny. This does gymnastic flick-flacks all over your mouth and yet, for all its very English slightness of frame, it has proper Pinot depth and perfume. The oak is beautifully judged. When an artist leans back, suspends her brush, looks, leans forward and brushes in a shadow with her thumb… that is the oak on this wine. Unless you’d watched it happening, you wouldn’t have known. But if it hadn’t happened, it would be missing. A truly lovely Pinot Noir, and that said without the caveat of ‘English’. 17/20 (Tamlyn Currin)
