WEINGUT HANEWALD-SCHWERDT WEISSBURGUNDER
Hanewald-Schwerdt is a partnership between Thomas Hanewald and Stephan Schwerdt who have taken over the running of their family winery. Thomas and Stephan are members of ‘Generation Riesling’ a body made up of the best young winemaking talent in Germany. Their focus is on dry wines, primarily made from Riesling and Pinot Noir that express their vintage and vineyard. The entry level wines aim to show off pure varietal character, while the village wines are all hand picked from individual soil types. The single vineyard wines demonstrate the highest levels of quality that each site and variety can produce.
The family owned and operated estate Hanewald-Schwerdt was founded in1955 in Leistadt. Today Thomas Hanewald & Stephan Schwerdt took over the family business which was established by their grandfather. The two cousins focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir. Pinot Blanc is the second most important white variety. The secret of their handcrafted wines is a unique limestone reef which dominates all the sites around Leistadt. A hidden treasure away off the beaten track.
The vines are old and surrounded by a protected natural resort in the shade of the Haardt mountains.
Tasting Note and Food Pairing
Based around the town of Leistadt, South West of Frankfurt, their vineyards sit on a limestone reef within a beautiful national park in the shadows of the Haardt mountains. They specialise in Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), but also make this lovely clean, fresh Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) which offers incredible value.
The limestone soils give this wine a lovely stony, mineral character, which combined with apricot flowers and ripe citrus fruits makes for a delicious and moreish combination. It is light in body, albeit with a textured mouthfeel and a lovely clean, lingering finish. The acidity is well integrated and brings real precision and balance.
A wine to drink on its own as an aperitif, or with foods that are hard to pair with, particularly asparagus dishes.
