Hattingley The English Gent
The English Gent 2021
Bottle notes
Delicate pale lemon in colour, with a fine persistent mousse, our Gent is bursting with fragrant aromas of blossom and white meadow flowers. On the palate, notes of grapefruit, orange peel and white stone fruit make way for a subtly sweet golden apple finish. With well-balanced acidity to offset and refresh the long persistent fruit flavours, it is crisp, dry, and wonderfully aromatic.
Vintage
A year with a late start and a varied and long growing season. 2021 saw late spring frosts affecting sites across the south of England, leading to reduced yields across the board. The summer presented growers with some serious challenges as the mild and often wet weather meant the vines were susceptible to disease. The grapes ripened slowly and although it was not a big harvest, what did come in was of high quality and showed great promise, with good sugar levels and acids higher than average, perfect for long-aged sparkling wines.
Production
This is a unique sparkling wine made from a blend of Bacchus and Pinot Gris. The grapes were hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed. After fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, the wine rested on lees for just three months before being bottled, in order to preserve its freshness and fragrant aromas. Once in bottle, it spent a further 30 months ageing on its lees before disgorging.
Pairing
For a truly British pairing, try it with a succulent Sunday roast chicken. Or equally as good on its own, for sipping away a carefree evening.
