Langham Pinot Meunier 2017

BOTTLE NOTES

A superb and rare example of a single varietal 100% Pinot Meunier from our Home Field Vineyard which juxtaposes delicate fruit aromas with a seriously concentrated palate.

A versatile wine suited to all occasions, drinking equally well on its own or with food such as charcuterie, poultry and mushroom-based recipes. Perfect now or age for up to 3 years

This new, young release from Langham is another example of why Pinot Meunier really deserves our attention in England. Langham has undergone something of a transformation over the last few years, moving from a more Champagne-like style of sparkling wine to an expression that celebrates English fruit purity and acidity, with minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery.

Tasting Notes

A pale-yellow colour with a stream of fine bubbles. Aromas of violets, orange blossom and peach posset. The palate has a fine mousse with stone fruit and sherbet flavours. This wine is both elegant and robust, showing great depth and broadness with a very long finish.

On the nose, there is such a unique fusion that it’s almost difficult to summarise in words. There is a complex mix of dried cranberry, fennel, toasted almond and poached pear.

This wine is an absolute textural sensation, and the palate is even more defined than the awesome nose. To taste, there’s red apple, cranberry and balsamic glazed cherries with ginger spice and toasted almond biscuit. It’s intense and complex but also has those lovely, pure red fruit flavours, and it’s also resoundingly delicious when paired with charcuterie.

BACKGROUND

All fruit for this wine was sourced from our single site in rural Dorset. The Crawthorne vineyard consists of 12 hectares planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and is located on a sheltered south facing slope at 80-100 metres above sea level. The soil consists of a shallow clay loam, containing flint, over deep Cretaceous chalk.

VINIFICATION

The grapes were picked in October 2017 and gently pressed, whole bunch. Press fractions were carefully separated and left to naturally settle for 24 hours. Primary fermentation took place in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and used oak barrels, followed by complete malolactic fermentation. Following 7 months of élevage, the final blend was bottled and left to age on lees for a minimum of 18 months. At disgorgement the wine received 2 g/L dosage and was aged for a further 3 to 6 months under cork.
