Mavrud “Merul”, 2018, Rumelia Winery

Bottle notes

Rumelia Wine Cellar was established in 2006 in the town of Panagyurishte. This was preceded by the planting of two vineyards of 54 ha in total located 20 km away of Panagyurishte, in the village of Smilets. The choice of this location was made after several studies of the soils, terrain exposure and weather conditions.

The variety structure consists of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and the typical Bulgarian indigenous Mavrud varieties, as well as the white Muscat Otonel and Chardonnay. The vineyard creation is made by a classic technology by using wooden posts. Most agro technical activities are manual, and no herbicides and pesticides are used. The crop is controlled and corrected by early trimming. Harvesting is also manual, by using cases, the grape being selected early at the vineyard.

Rumelia Wine Cellar annual capacity is 500,000 bottles. It has its own laboratory to make all the necessary analyses from the grape to the ready wine prior to bottling. The barrels used are of the barrique type – 225 litres and made of French, American and Bulgarian oak. Rumelia Wine Cellar highly appreciates the traditions established in the past in the winemaking art and sacrament by enriching them with the new achievements and looks for that uniqueness of its trademark giving the wine its own unique aroma and refined style.
