Producer Note

Fourteenth generation winemaker, Louis Barroul of Château de Saint Cosme fame, is one of the most highly respected winemakers in the Rhône Valley and is affectionately referred to by fellow winemakers of the region as the ‘Genius of Gigondas’. With great determination and flair, he showcases the great potential of the terroir with his outstanding cuvées from carefully selected vineyards. Over the years, Louis has established his own ‘negoce’ wines, seeking out the spirit of soils and vineyards, working painstakingly with small batch fermentations, advancing hand in hand with wine growers who love what they do, while adding that special touch. This has enabled him to explore and master different terroirs, from which he consistently produces pure wines with a precise sense of place, personality and balance.

Vineyard

Blending Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc is unconventional, perhaps because the varietals are traditionally grown in different regions of France - that is, except in the Languedoc, where they grow side by side. The two varieties complement each other incredibly well. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this cuvée come from carefully selected vineyards in the Languedoc, while the Viognier comes from parcels in the Languedoc and the Rhône. Each terroir is made up of a distinctive combination of microclimate and soil types, each imparting the fruit with characters that come together to create a unique blend. The bunches are carefully hand-harvested at optimal maturity.

Winemaking

Blending these two grape varieties and crafting them together is more than just a question of analysis, figures and theories – it is about style and alchemy. The crop was destemmed and vinified with wild, indigenous yeasts, which retained the individual characteristics of the Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier and the terroir in which they were grown. Vinified with minimal intervention and without filtration, the wine was bottled early to retain the expressive fruit and vibrancy.
