Bodegas Virgen de Lorea, situated in Zalla within Bizkaia in
Spain's Basque Country, has a winemaking tradition dating back more than three
centuries. The estate, now comprising about 35 hectares of vineyards, is set on
calcareous-clay soils ideal for Txakoli production.
The family-run winery produces several types of Txakoli,
focusing on the Hondarrabi Zuri grape, with some plantings of its close
relative Hondarrabi Zerratia. The Bizkaiko Txakolina region is characterised by
moderate rainfall and cool Atlantic winds, providing the crisp, zesty character
in the wines and supporting gradual fruit ripening.
Their Flagship young Txakoli, spends a month on lees
resulting in a slightly textural Txakoli, with well ripe citrus and green apple
notes lifted by refreshing zippy acidity, delicious and dangerously easy
drinking!
