Geno Tinto. Alentejo, Portugal

Bottle notes

The Geno Tinto is a rich and fruity wine made up of a blend of both local Portuguese and international grape varieties: Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah. Aragonez (also known as Tinta Roriz in Douro or Tempranillo in Spain) thrives in the hot, dry climate of the Alentejo and produces wines that are rich and lively with copious berry fruit and spice. Trincadeira (also known as Tinta Amarela in Douro) also does well in hot climates adding vibrant raspberry fruit and a herby, peppery note to blends. The red-fleshed French grape Alicante Bouschet gives an inky, treacle backbone to the blend and the Syrah adds a touch of spice.

Geno is produced by the acclaimed Fundacao Eugenio de Almeida, who are located in the Evora sub-region of the Alentejo. Geno portrays the Alentejo farmer, wearing a typical hat and red scarf. Geno is a nickname used in Alentejo for a young farmer. Bordering to the north by the Tagus River and Algarve to the south, the Alentejo region derives its name from Alem Tejo, which literally means ‘beyond the Tagus’. It is one of the most dynamic wine regions in Portugal. The Evora sub-region is known for its hot, dry conditions and the wines are typically robust and multi-layered with good acidic balance. The Geno wine specifically come from vineyards that have a high granite content which imparts great freshness to the wines.
